Fall is the best time to check out the spectacular scenery of the Great Smoky Mountains!
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited National Park in the US. It's conveniently accessible from many states, and it offers a wide variety of activities to please every member of the family.
The fall foliage season is the most frequently visited time of year and lodging runs out quickly. However, if you are lucky last minute deals are always possible due to cancelations and unexpected vacancies. Check out East Tennessee vacation rentals at
VRBO.com. They offer a great selection of privately owned rental homes and it's often possible to negotiate a good deal. The Smoky Mountain area is populated by several different communities and each one has it's own unique flavor.
Here's an insider's guide to the most popular vacation spots-
Gatlinburg is a favorite destination with many folks due to the European style architecture and abundance of activity. If you're looking for shopping, dining and nightlife this is the town for you. Don't miss the
Gatlinburg Arts and Crafts Community for an awesome collection of handmade goods.
Pigeon Forge, Tennessee has become a hub of entertainment and shopping. You'll find musical performances of every kind, but the emphasis is on country, bluegrass and gospel styles. If you need a good laugh this town also boasts a large number of comedy clubs and magic shows. But be aware- Pigeon Forge has become quite a busy traffic filled thoroughfare, so if you're seeking a peaceful retreat this might not be the best place to hang your hat.
Our favorite place to stay in the Smoky Mountains is Townsend, Tennessee. This sleepy community calls itself the "peaceful side of the Smokies". It is home to the breathtaking Cades Cove, a secluded little section of the National Park the should not be missed. There you will find wildlife (running wild!) and preserved historical structures built by early American settlers. You'll also want to take a drive down Wears Valley Road-this lonely stretch of highway is dotted with numerous antique shops and workshops of various local artists. A day of pure heaven!
